Renovating? Start with the end in mind

Updated: Jun 11, 2024

The number 1 tip we have for any renovation is to start with the end in mind.  But what does that mean and what do you need to consider?

Vision and Purpose

Begin by envisioning the end result.  What are you wanting your renovated space to look and feel like?  What problem are you trying to fix with a renovation?

For instance, do you want a new kitchen purely for aesthetics, or is its current functionality driving you insane and you’re looking for some smarts. Do you have a growing family and need more space, or are you living in an older, poorly designed home and want to make better use of the space.

Once you understand your vision and purpose for the renovation, this will help to guide your decisions throughout the process.

Functionality and Flow

Consider the daily routines of everyone in the home, traffic flow and practical needs.  How is it functioning now, and how do you want it to function?

For example, is there only one basin in the bathroom but there are two of you needing to get ready at the same time? Or like our example below, where the the kitchen was small and tucked away in a corner and the family opted for a wide, galley kitchen to better serve their family?

It is important to understand requirements… and to plan to scale.  Ensure that spaces are big enough to serve their purpose.  And don’t forget to consider your storage!

Emotional Connection

Think about how you want to feel when you walk through the door.  Aim to create a cohesive space that reflects your personality.  Choose the colours, textures and materials that give you the feeling you are after.

For example, the colours you select can have an effect on your mood.  Choose Neutrals or Blues to create a calming space.  Or pops of Yellow or Pink if you’re looking to create a fun and playful space.

Consistency in Selections

Consistency is key. Whether you’re renovating one room or the entire house, maintain a cohesive design language. Stick to a style and colour palette to create a harmonious flow from room to room.  We find that creating a mood or vision board for your house at the get go, can help you to stick to your design plan.

And lastly,

Patience and Long-Term Perspective

Renovations take time. Be patient and avoid rushing decisions.  Even if the process extends beyond your initial timeline, stay committed to your vision. Consistency pays off.

Remember, a well-thought-out renovation plan sets the stage for a beautiful, functional home that aligns with your lifestyle.
